The longer a doubles pair play together, the more valuable experience and mutual understanding can be gained. We have seen this with the likes of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan, the current men’s doubles world champions. The English number two women’s doubles pair, Jenny Moore and Victoria Williams, value this in their own partnership when Williams states.

-We got thrown together we were U17 and played together since then. We know each other so well and we are best friends off court as well, so that always helps. We had a break for about a year when I was injured, but I think that did us good to be honest. But we have played with each other a lot.

Currently ranked number 61 in the world, Moore and Williams finished off the year with a solid quarterfinal result at the Italian International, losing to eventual runners-up, Davletova and Bolotova of Russia. Thinking positively about 2020, Moore says.

-Our aim is to definitely move up the world ranking. The long-term aim would be looking at top 30.

Bring our level up
The number one English women’s doubles pair, Lauren Smith and Chloe Birch, have been in great form and have reached number 22 in the world. Commenting on the impact that this has on them in training, Moore explains.

-It is really good for us because obviously we train with them when they are in the country, as they do compete a lot. In training we get to play matches against them, so for us that is really good. We are looking to compete with them as much as we can in the training hall, as we have not actually played them in competition before, but this will bring our level up at the same time.
