Badminton Europe Confederation (BEC) would like to wish Badminton Ireland, a happy 120th anniversary.

The federation has, over the years, played a pivotal part in Badminton Europe’s efforts to grow the sport in Europe.

Badminton Ireland was founded back on the 25 November 1899 and has its 120th anniversary this year. It has been a member association for 51 years since they joined Badminton Europe only one year after the confederation was founded in 1967.

Throughout the anniversary year, Badminton Ireland has been a great support to BEC by hosting the Road to Tokyo Para badminton High Performance Training as well as the BEC BASIS Programme – National Umpire Education Programme in Dublin.

Not to mention the successful Irish Open, which has been an important part of the BEC Circuit, with players from all over the world entering.

A good cause

As a part of its 120th anniversary, Badminton Ireland will be raising money for cancer research, through an event they call SMASH Cancer. Here it has partnered with the Irish Cancer Society and the National Breast Cancer Research Institute.

At the event Badminton Ireland will conduct a raffle where you have the chance to win a lot of great prizes, for example a paid trip for two to the YONEX All England or a box of shuttles for your badminton club and the money will go to the cancer research.

Ronan Rooney, Badminton Ireland chairman, had this to say about the federation's 120th anniversary.

- 2019 is a very special year for Irish badminton as we celebrate our 120th anniversary.  We are planning a range of events to mark this special milestone, including a special Annual Awards ceremony, where we will honour the history of Irish Badminton, the launch of our SMASH Cancer charity fundraiser and much more, Rooney said.

David McGill, the General Secretary of Badminton Ireland, is delighted about the things Badminton Ireland has done over the years and has also commented about the anniversary and the federation's achievements:

- Badminton Ireland are incredibly proud to be celebrating our 120th anniversary this year. This is a massive milestone for Badminton Ireland. We have come along way since our founding in 1899, much of which is evident so far this year. Our athletes have had some fantastic results on the world stage, with three of our Irish players currently targeting 2020 Olympic qualification, and one player targeting 2020 Paralympic qualification, he said.

- We are also delighted to mark this anniversary with some significant initiatives that improve our sport for all participants in Ireland, including our new Graded Finals and International events, which allows grassroots players to achieve an All Ireland title and represent their county internationally.

- This has been an exhilarating year for Irish Badminton, and we look forward to continued success in 2020, he added.
