The quarterfinals at the Hong Kong Open has been played and the only Europeans left were Danes.

The first Danes in action were Mathias Boe and Mads Conrad-Petersen. They were facing Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan, the defending world champions. The Indonesian pair were very strong, and in just 27 minutes, they had defeated the Danes 21-11 21-11.

The women’s doubles, Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen, delivered an amazing result yesterday by beating the eight seeded Koreans. Today they were playing China’s third seeded Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan. With 30 places between the two pairs, you would expect it to be a clear win for the Chinese. But the Danes continued their good play from yesterday and managed to challenge the third seeds. Chen and Jia showed why they are the now the world’s no. 2 and closed the match 22-20 21-18.

After the two loses, the only European hopes were the two men's singles.

The men’s singles

The first Danish men’s singles in action was Viktor Axelsen. He played Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong China. Lee Cheuk Yiu is no. 27 at the world ranking at the moment, and therefore the advance was in Axelsen’s favour. But with the fantastically supportive crowd in the back, Lee Cheuk Yiu managed to beat the world’s no. 5 in straight games 21-14 21-19.

The last Dane at the Hong Kong Open was world’s no. 3, Anders Antonsen. Once again Antonsen met Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the quarterfinal. Antonsen has been playing Christie in the quarterfinal in the last few tournaments. At French Open it was Christie who won, but at the Fuzhou China Open Antonsen played better and won this match.

Today, it was a strong Christie Antonsen was facing. Christie got a good start and Antonsen was behind the whole game, which Christie won 21-15.  In the second game Antonsen still struggled to make points and was never close to winning the game. Christie ended up winning the second game 21-11.

After Axelsen and Antonsen lost their matches, there are now no Europeans left at the Hong Kong Open 2019.
