The big upset of the mixed doubles first round played yesterday was caused by Russia’s Rodion Alimov and Alina Davletova, who defeated Malaysia’s Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing in a thrilling three game encounter. With fourteen ranking spots between them, this was certainly a big surprise.

The Russians saw two of their match points saved but converted on the third opportunity to progress into the second round, 21-19 17-21 21-19.

Speaking to Badminton Europe in an exclusive interview one year ago, Alina Davletova spoke about playing in big tournaments

- I would say that I feel more confident playing with top players than 2 years ago. Experience is everything.

Now we can see how this hard work and strong mindset is starting to pay off.

They will tomorrow face the number three seeds from Thailand, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai. They played this year in Basel for the World Championships, which was a one-sided match for the Thai pair, but with the Russians buoyed by a terrific win, it can be a great match to keep an eye on.
