With just a little over eight months until the Olympic games and only six months left of the qualification period, the real fight for qualification spots is just beginning.

In an exclusive interview, we asked one such pair who are in the running for a place at the Olympics, Niclas Nøhr and Sara Thygesen. They are currently the second highest ranked mixed doubles pair in Denmark, seventeen places behind Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje.

Despite this gap, they have shown great signs in getting big results which will help them greatly in their quest for big points. One such example came last week at the SaarLorLux Open when beating world number eight English pair Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith. We asked Nøhr what went so right this time, as they played just a week before in the Dutch Open with a very different result.

-Yes, we were really happy about the win. We lost the last two match-ups against Ellis and Smith, and they totally destroyed us in the Dutch Open where we couldn’t find any solutions.

-So, we used a lot of time to prepare that match and used some time to find a few gaps and new ways to play against them. And that went really well in that match.

There is still some way

For Nøhr and Thygesen, there is a big opportunity to be Denmark's mixed doubles pair in Tokyo. We asked whether there is the pressure building around this opportunity?

-Right now, we are just focusing climbing the world rank and finding a consistent level again. I think we have improved the last few weeks, hopefully we can continue that.

-Both Christiansen and Bøje, and us have some opportunities to qualify, but right now there still is some way.

End 2019 with some wins

Each coming tournament will be that little bit more important in a player’s hunt for points, with one eye also on how your teammates are performing. Lastly, we asked Nøhr what his main focuses are come the end of 2019, he stated

-Right now, we have some tournaments left and will try to end 2019 with some wins. We will try improving our game so we can begin 2020 with a lot of confidence.

Nøhr and Thygesen will next play the Gwangju Korea Masters in Korea.
