Jack Shephard is able to introduce himself as the SS6 men’s singles world champion for another two years.

The final was a repeat of the mouth-watering classics we’ve seen between England’s Jack Shephard and Wong Chun Yim from Hong Kong over the years.

Until today with Wong on the other side of the net, it was arguable to say that the world number five from Hong Kong was just that - number five. The fifth strongest of the leading SS6 players and that he no longer features in the men's singles on finals day.

Well Wong Chun Yim proved to everyone this week that he is still a contender. The only man who might argue otherwise is Jack Shephard, the reigning world champion, after this performance.

Once Shephard got up to speed around 8-7 in the first game, he began the slow and painful dismantling of the Hong Kong defence. A 21-10 match winning second game, filled with diving defensive play and perfect slice winning shots enabled Shephard to get his hands on the 2019 title.

“if you don’t work hard, you don’t get what you want”

Shephard had this to say after the match:

- I had to work really hard in the match today and to get my tactics right. I managed to get things right and it feels amazing to come through on top.

- We had a lot of support this week, a big team and my family came over. It was a great atmosphere in the hall and amazing to have that many people cheering me on, he added.

- I’m so happy with my performance this week and of course taking the title again. It’s a huge reward for all the commitment I put in. If you don’t work hard, you don’t get what you want, he said.

- I just work my hardest and achieved what I wanted. The Paralympics is next. There is only one aim now, the Paralympic gold medal. That’s what I am aiming for, he told us.
