Mi Young-Chin and Valeska Knoblauch destroyed the Swiss dreams of a medal in the WH1-2 mixed doubles at their home championships today as they beat them in their quarterfinal.

German WH1-2 mixed doubles pairing Mi Young-Chin and Valeska Knoblauch beat Switzerland’s Luca Olgiati and Karin Suter-Erath in the quarterfinals today, after Suter-Erath had been marginally beaten in the WH1-2 women’s doubles with partner Cynthia Mathez just an hour or so earlier. Those defeats left only Karin Suter-Erath with a last chance of a Swiss medal on home soil in Basel, in the singles.

This was the second match today for Knoblauch, who also features in tomorrow’s WH1 singles quarterfinals against China’s Yin Menglu. Incredibly, Mi was involved in five matches throughout day four. He’s in a quarterfinal in WH1 singles tomorrow as well, against Lee Dong Seop (KOR).

When venue Wi-Fi technical difficulties meant that the scoreboards and the livestream went down, the umpire had to announce the score with a little extra volume as the Swiss crowds were on their feet in anticipation.

A 21-13, 21-17 win for the Germans sees them into a very tough semifinal against the hot young stars from China, Yang Tong and Li Hongyan tomorrow afternoon.

“We knew we had had a chance to go far this week”

- Young-Chin helped me a lot today, I felt insecure at the start of the match and wasn’t hitting the shuttle well. He relaxed me and it worked out. We were a little stronger than them and our tactics worked well. We knew we had a good chance to go far in the mixed doubles, we know each other very well and that has helped this week, Knoblauch said.

- I haven’t played Yin Menglu before and I’m excited to play her tomorrow in the quarterfinal. I hope I can do it, I hope I can win. I would love to be on the podium in singles, but there is very strong opposition from China, Japan and Thailand, she added.

- The atmosphere here this week has been amazing. The media attention on us is higher than usual with the World Championships going on next door and that is very good for the sport. It is also very good for the athletes as we have to get used to the attention, and used to being interviewed, she told BEC.
