A win in mixed doubles and a loss for the European Games champions were the results on Tuesday afternoon for the English doubles.

It was an afternoon of mixed feelings for the English watching Chris Adcock and Gabby Adcock securing a spot in the third round, as in the meantime, in the women’s doubles category, Lauren Smith and Chloe Birch lost to fellow Europeans, Alina Davletova/Ekaterina Bolotova from Russia.

Clinical Adcocks
The Adcocks won in straight games 21-19 21-10 against Tuan Duc Do/Nhu Thao Pham from Vietnam.

- We are super happy with how we came out in that game, and I think we were very clinical and got the job done, Gabby Adcock said.

- The first game was getting used to playing here. It has been a long time since we played here – I think it was in 2014, where the courts were the other way around. It was a good game to start on, because they can play the rallies quite well, Chris Adcock added.

In the third round the Adcocks will play the former All England winners Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino from Japan.

Underperforming
Ahead of the World Championships the expectations to Lauren Smith and Chloe Birch were high. In the first round against the Russians the European Games winners came out short 21-17 21-15.

- It was a quite big underperformance from us. It was not one area in particular, but it was most areas not being very good. We bled a lot of points, and we did not put ourselves into good positions in the rallies, Lauren Smith said.

- It is always difficult to take when you know you can beat that pair. We had them in the past, and going into the World Championships you have to deliver, Birch mentioned.
