The BWF World Championships are now just two days away! Both the world and continents best are all set to compete at St. Jakobshalle Hall in Basel, Switzerland where we will find out who will take home the illustrious world title.

English hopes

It’s only England out of all the European countries that have a seeded pair in the mixed doubles for the World Championships.

In fact, they have two with both Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith and husband and wife pair of Chris and Gabrielle Adcock seeded for the event.

Ellis and Smith are seeded 8
th, whilst the Adcock’s are seeded 11th and whilst not being favourites, both pairs will fancy themselves to go far in the competition.

Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith will be feeling especially confident after winning the European Games back in June and will be hoping for success in a similar style competition in Basel.

Who are the favourites?

There hasn’t been a European World Championship winner in the mixed doubles since 2009 when the Danish pair of Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl were crowned champions in India ten years ago.

Since then the competition has been dominated by China and that looks to be the case again in Basel.

China have both the first and second seeds coming into this year’s competition with Si Wei Zheng and Ya Qiong Huang the top seeds and compatriots Lyu Yi Yang and Huang Dong Ping seeded second.

Zheng and Huang are the current champions but Huang and Yang were victorious over their compatriots in the World Tour Finals so it could be an intriguing clash if the two Chinese pairs meet once again.
