Lucas Mazur makes it to the SL4 men’s singles final and the SL3-SU5 mixed doubles final with partner Faustine Noel, tomorrow in Dublin.

French SL4 star Lucas Mazur battled his way into 2 finals today. Turkish opposition proved no match for the French in the SL3-SU5 mixed doubles quarter-final early on with a 21-12, 21-11 performance.

Noel and Mazur moved on to face old foes, and 5/8 seeds Jan-Niklas Pott and Katrin Seibert in the semi-finals and struggled as the German’s took the opening game 22-24. A change of tactics and a new pair reappeared to take games two and three which ended 21-16, 21-11. Mazur had this to say:

“I’m very proud of my level today, it was a very hard semi-final against the Germans that went to 3 games. However tomorrow will be even more tough, but we are aiming to win”

“We had to change the way we were playing significantly, we took the power out of the game and looked for the open spaces instead. In a fast, flat game they are better than us and we had to learn and adapt.”

They take on world number 1 pair form Indonesia tomorrow, Harry Susanto and Leani Ratri Oktila.

Dominating the men’s singles

Mazur managed to avoid Indian opposition this week in the lead up to the final. Good news for the Frenchman, who is still number 1 in the world. Yet he sits at number 2 in the Road to Tokyo rankings, with Tarun Tarun at number 1 and 2 more Indians at numbers 3 and 4.

Two of these men have caused him trouble of late, Tarun who beat Mazur in the Canadian final last month and teammate Suhas Yathiraj who out-classed the world champion in the Turkish final in March.

Half of the 8 quarter-final slots were made up of Indians today and they were all on one side of the draw. Mazur dispatched Swede Rickard Nilsson in the quarter’s 21-1, 21-9 and went onto face Thailand’s Siripong Teamarrom in the semi’s.

A comfortable 21-9, 21-13 win sees Mazur into his fourth final in as many tournaments, and with Tarun losing to Suhas in the quarters, a prime opportunity for the Frenchman to overtake people in the race to the Paralympics. He had this to say after the match:

“I’m very happy with how my singles has been going all week. I am looking forward to a fight tomorrow against Suhas, one of the greatest players in the world. I hope it will be a great final and I want to win the title.”

Mroz achieves the impossible

Poland’s Bartlomiej Mroz beat Malaysia’s Cheah Liek Hou in 3 incredible games to take his place in the SU5 men’s singles final tomorrow. An amazing achievement for the Pol, the first win over the multiple world champion and a huge step forward on Mroz’ campaign towards Tokyo 2020.

Mroz will face Indonesia’s Dheva Anrimusthi in the final, who currently leads both world and Race to Tokyo rankings
