As the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games is nearly one year away, and the first ever Paralympics where badminton will be a medal event, Badminton Europe are making sure that the sport is best prepared for the event.

Badminton Europe (BEC) in co-operation with Badminton Ireland (BI), is hosting a training camp for elite para-badminton players at the National Indoor Arena, Dublin on 17 and 18 June 2019.

What is the plan?

Approximately 30 players will travel to the Irish capital for the two-day training camp lead by BEC & BI.

Players from around 14 different countries of Europe will take part including players from England, Belgium, Germany and Russia.

The participants of the course will be using the sports hall for practice and also the meeting rooms for theory-based sessions to best prepare them for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

A view from the players

Thomas Wandschneider who competes in WH2 believes that the camp will allow the players to learn different things and praised the idea to create the camp.

The German is one of the participants taking part in the para-badminton camp in Dublin next month, ahead of Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

- I think that is the best idea for a long time. Making the offer and putting all the best European players into one training camp, Wandschneider said.

- They will be growing up together. Every player will learn from another player, we can exchange questions and tips about training, he added.

- So, I'm happy about every possibility to grow up and learn more and more above para-badminton. We can all help everyone improve by boosting each other.

This training camp is part of BEC initiatives prior to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Selected WH1, WH2 and SL3 players were invited to attend this camp and SU5 and SS6 players were invited to train either at the BEC Centre of Excellence or one of our Certificated Training Centres.

Development within the camp

Badminton Ireland’s Chief Executive Officer, David McGill welcomes the participants to the camp in June which takes place prior to the FZ FORZA Irish Para-Badminton International.

- Badminton Ireland is delighted to once again host the BEC Para-Badminton Training Camp in our National Indoor Arena, Dublin, Ireland, David McGill said.

- We had previously hosted this camp the BEC Para-Badminton Event in 2017 for grassroot para-badminton in Lisburn Rackets Club, Northern Ireland and it is heartening to see how it has grown since then, he added.

The CEO of BI has showed his delight in hosting the camp ahead of the tournament which is in between 19-23 June 2019.

- 2019 is a very special year for Irish badminton as we celebrate our 120th anniversary, and we are proud to host this camp in advance of our largest ever Irish Para-Badminton Open, the BI CEO told Badminton Europe.

- I want to extend the warmest of welcomes to all the participants of this year’s camp, and I hope you will enjoy your time in Ireland.”

Good initiative

Man Kei To, one of the athletes at the camp really appreciates the support to both she and the rest of the participants in the camp.

To will take part in the camp in Dublin, later this month.

- I'm sure this is a high-level training camp and it's a really great initiative of BEC to organise it, Man Kei To said.

- It means that BEC cares about their European players and has faith in them and want to support them as much as possible on the road to Tokyo.

- It also means a lot to us, as athletes, having this federation behind us, the Belgian continued.
