The 2019 Sudirman Cup finally got underway today and it was an action-packed day in Nanning China.

A number of the World’s top Badminton players have descended on the Guangzhi Sport’s centre and from today all until next Sunday, each player will be doing everything they possibly can to bring home the title for their respective nation.

England start off with a defeat

Starting in Group One and it was a disappointing start for England as they fell to a 4-1 defeat to Indonesia.

Despite the Indonesians being favourites to win it was still a disappointing day for the English, who were beaten much more comfortably than they would have liked.

England’s only win of the tie came in the Mixed Doubles when the Husband and Wife pair of Chris and Gabrielle Adcock ran out convincing winners in their match against Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti.

The pair were on top for the majority of the match and managed to edge two close games over the Indonesians 21-17, 21-18.

Defeats in all of the other categories mean a defeat in the opening game for England and they’ll hope to bounce back when they face Denmark on Monday.

Germany prevails over Israel

On the other hand, Germany got themselves off to a wonderful start in Group 2B with a win over Israel.

The German’s edged the tie by three matches to two to go top of the Group at the end of day one after securing a larger victory over Israel than Canada could over Singapore in the other match.

Germany were largely dominant in the Doubles categories where they won in all three.

The Mixed Doubles the team of Linda Efler and Marvin Seidel and Men’s Doubles team of Jones Ralpy Jansen and Peter Kaesbauer both ran out convincing winners but it was the Women’s Doubles team of Johanna Goliszewski and Lara Kaepplein that were particularly strong.

Goliszewski and Kaepplein managed to defeat their opponents by a combined match score of 42-15 over the two games to give themselves a comfortable 2-0 win over Israel’s Yuval Pugach and Margeret Lurie.

The German team will now take Singapore on Monday as they look to continue their 100% record.

Elsewhere there were comfortable victories for both Ireland and France in their opening matches over Nepal and the USA respectively whilst the Netherlands edged a 3-2 victory over Vietnam.
