Lindsey Ireland successfully defended her under 17 girls’ singles title today at the U13/17 National Junior Badminton Championships at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell.

And she went on to win a title treble of singles, doubles and mixed while in the under 13 events Renfrew’s Iona Muir also won a clean sweep of trophies.

Ireland (Aberdeen) defended her singles title without dropping a game, with her hardest match coming in the semi-finals where she won 21-14 21-17 to end Brooke Stalkers campaign.

She secured back-to-back titles with a dominant performance in the final against second seed Jodie Black, winning 21-10 21-5 after Black came back from the brink of defeat in the deciding game of her semi-final against Abbie Brooks to squeak through 21-16 17-21 21-19.

Ireland and Black teamed up to win the girls’ doubles, beating Stalker and Keryn Swan in the final but the younger pair had threatened an upset by taking the second game before the top seeds reasserted their authority to win 21-12 18-21 21-19.

And Ireland bagged her hat-trick in the mixed doubles with Nathan MacPherson against Stalker and Isaac Weir, saving a match point in the second game before completing the turnaround to win 22-24 24-22 21-9 in one of the best matches of the tournament and the last match of the day.

Speaking afterwards she said: “I feel very happy. I played well but I didn’t really expect that [to win a treble].

“I hoped I would win the singles and I felt quite relieved to have kept that one.

“In the mixed I just told myself to keep going and not panic when they had match point.”

MacPherson and Euan Campbell both won a brace of titles. Campbell won his under 17 boys’ singles final 21-16 21-14 over Callum Stokes before teaming up with MacPherson to topple top seeds Lewis Hart and Weir 15-21 21-12 21-12.

In the under 13 age group Iona Muir, the top seed in all three of her events, was dominant throughout the weekend and won her hat-trick without dropping a single game.

She claimed the singles title at the expense of her doubles partner Deepti Vijayakumar, winning the final 21-12 21-5 before the pair teamed up to win the girls’ doubles, beating Abigail Barrie and Lanna Campbell 21-8 21-10.

And Muir completed her hat-trick with Ewan Stewart in the mixed doubles, beating Alfie Martin and Lanna Campbell 21-13 21-12 in the final.

Blair Tait won a brace of titles, winning the boys’ singles against Tushar Senthilrajaram 21-9 21-14 in the final.

He doubled his tally with Lewis McDonald in the boys’ doubles, again at the expense of Senthilrajaram and his partner Lingyun Xiao, with the top seeds winning a thriller 22-20 14-21 21-19.
