Kirsty Gilmour has reached the round of 16 at the CELCOM AXIATA Malaysia Open 2019, after beating Evgeniya Kosetskaya. Tomorrow, she will be facing the current number seven in the world.

On Wednesday, the first round of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament got underway in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour had to deal with European competition in her first match.

The Scot, who is currently ranked number 28 in the world, was facing the runner-up of the European Games 2018 and today’s world’s number 34, Evgeniya Kosetskaya from Russia.

“I knew this would be a tough match, as our ranking is quite similar. But I have won the last two matches between us, so I had confidence on my side,” Gilmour said.

“The conditions in the hall are very difficult, there's a lot of wind. So, I knew if I managed to control that I could control the game. I had a bad start, but I fought hard and found a way to turn it around,” she added.

In the end, Gilmour was able to win the match in two close games (22-20, 21-16). Now, she has to deal with a big task in the next round in Kuala Lumpur.

Gilmour versus He Bingjiao in the second round

Tomorrow, the Scot will be playing against He Bingjiao from China in the round of the last 16. The current number seven in the world and number six seed for the tournament was able to beat Line Kjæersfeldt in three games (10-21, 21-12, 21-12) on Wednesday.

“I'm really looking forward to the next round. I've won both times I have played against He Bingjiao, so I don't think she likes playing me,” Gilmour said.

"But this is a new match and she is a world class player, so I will have to be ready and focussed."
