It was joy for the English pair Ben Lane & Jessica Pugh as they claimed the Mixed Doubles title at the Yonex Polish Open on Sunday.

Lane and Pugh ran out 21-17, 21-15 winners over the French pair of Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue just inside 40 minutes to claim the pairs first title of 2019.

The English pair had a bit of a scare in the opening game, finding themselves 6-1 down early on, but managed to recover, winning 9 of the games final 12 points to take the opening game 21-17.

They then wrapped the match up in straight games after aback and forth second game which Lane and Pugh eventually managed to take control of to come out 21-15 victors.

Li loses out in a tiebreak

On the other hand, it was heartbreak for Germany’s Yvonne Li who was lost the Women’s Singles final to Wei Yaxin (China).

Li was the top seed for the tournament in Czestochowa and will be disappointed with the opening game where she fell to a 21-8 defeat.

The German did manage to fight back however and level the match, winning a closely fought second game 19-21 but it was not enough in the end.

Yaxin managed to hold her nerve as the game passed the hour mark and managed to take the final game 22-20.

Unseeded Danes lose out in Final

It was just as close a match in the Women’s Doubles Final where the unseeded Danish pair of Alexandra Boje and Mette Poulsen lost out to the established Japanese pair of Chisato Hoshi and Aoi Matsuda, 21-18, 15-21,21-17.

The Danes battled all game long but it wasn’t quite enough to take home the title as the number five seeds from Japan just managed to edge the Danes out in a 70-minute contest.

Boje and Poulsen came into the event ranked 245th in the World so will be happy with such a strong result despite just falling short but the event will give them confidence going into future events.
