There was joy for Sweden’s Felix Burestedt this week as he won the Portuguese International Championship in Caldas da Rainha on Sunday.

The International Series event ran from the 7th to the 10th March and the Swede was victorious over Malaysia’s Teck Zhi Soo in the Men’s Singles Final 21-23, 21-8, 21-17.

The World number 91, looked set for a case of déja vu after losing in the final of this competition last year and then going behind after losing the first game via a tie break. The Swede managed to compose himself and turned the game around to dominate the final two games to take the title.

Make-shift European pair storm to the title

In the Women’s Doubles the make shift pair of Julie Finne-Ipsen(Denmark) and Clara Nistad (Sweden), dominated the competition to claim the title.

The Dane and the Swede are an unranked pair but comfortably beat the number two seeds Chang Ching Hui and Yang Ching Tun (Chinese Tapei),21-11, 21-15 in the final.

After such an impressive display in Portugal it will be interesting to see if the pair will join forces once again in the coming weeks to try keep up this run of form.

Scotland’s Grimley Brothers fall just short

As for the Men’s Doubles Scotland’s Matthew and Christopher Grimley fell just short in Portugal.

The Brother’s lost out in what was an all unseeded Final in the Men’s Doubles to the pair of Chang Ko-Chi and Fang Chen Lee (Chinese Tapei),16-21, 21-16, 13-21.

It was an impressive performance from the young Scots in just their second tournament of the year as they move up from the Junior Competitions which they had so much success in 2018.
