On Day 1 of the Li NING BWF World Junior Championships 2018 in Canada, there has been a positive start for European countries.

Just shy of 50 victories, there has been a lot of good badminton on show in Markham, Canada, as the Individual event got underway on Monday.

The first win of the day came from Scottish U19 Women’s Singles player, Lauren Middleton, who managed to claim the win against Valeriya Rudakova from Ukraine in straight games.

Nguyen starts his ‘road to a medal’

Next, to Middleton, Nhat Nguyen from Ireland was also able to be one of the 49 wins of Europe on Monday, with a comfortable victory over his Italian opponent, Enrico Baroni (21-8, 21-12).

The Irish sensation has had a reasonably good year so far, including a close semi-final match against Christo Popov at the European Junior Championships.

Nguyen now goes into the round of 64, where he will play against the 16-year-old, Ryan Zheng from the United States of America.

A medal for Nguyen?

Despite dominating the match, Nguyen revealed to Badminton Europe that it was not his style to play in a slow hall.

Nguyen is looking to go far in this tournament, and the Irishman is really optimistic about his chances in Canada:

- It was a comfortable win for me. The hall is a bit slow, so I have had to work on adjusting my game to cope with this, he said.

- I am really happy with the win and I am looking forward to the match tomorrow (Tuesday), he added.

- I am feeling very good at the moment and I definitely want a medal in this tournament, I fancy my chances here.
