After day two of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, there were plenty of wins for European countries.
The first came in an all-European clash as Frenchman Arnaud Merkle came up against Lukas Resch from Germany in the third match of the day.
Merkle took the match eventually after playing out three games to bring the thriller to an end, after being pegged back in the second.
The Frenchman won the first game 21-12 before Resch hit back with an 18-21 win which brought things level ready for Merkle to take the third in comfortable style with a 21-12 victory!
Just enough for Merkle
Merkle, speaking to Badminton Europe showed his delight about his performance in the first game and part way into the second.
The Frenchman, however, revealed that he became stressed halfway through the second when he was in a winning position, which resulted in Resch taking the second game.
Merkle admitted that he did not play at his best, but hopes to find his best level for the upcoming match against Canadian Brian Yang.
- I had a good start to the match and played very well in the first game.
- The second was frustrating, I was winning 13-9 and I lost focus and started to stress.
- I did not really play at my best level but it was enough to win the match, hopefully, I can play at my best level in the next match.
More wins for Europe!
Later on, more European victories managed to get on the board in Argentina with Grace King from Great Britain getting the first of seven more wins for European countries!
Play continues this afternoon from Buenos Aires, in Argentina, with Arnaud Merkle getting us underway in the first match.
Others came from Ireland (Nhat Nguyen), Czech Republic (Tereza Svabikova, Belgium (Julien Carraggi, Spain (Elena Andreu, Hungary (Vivien Sandorhazi) and Bulgaria with Maria Delcheva.
