Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt reaches her first singles final in almost three years. Despite an impressive second set recovery by Hong Kong opponent Yip Pui Yin, Kjaersfeldt managed to pull through in straight sets 21-14, 21-19.

It has been an impressive week for the 24-year-old, as she went into this semi-final bout without losing a set. The opener saw Kjaersfeldt pull away early on and never look back. In the end, the tournaments third seed comfortably took the first 21-14.

Set number two looked to be even more dominant. However, Yip started to find some momentum and recovered from as far back as 11-2 down. The deficit was eventually wiped out at 18-18. But once her Hong Kong opponent took a 19-18 lead, Kjaersfeldt produced a flurry of strong performances in the last few points to secure a spot in the women’s singles.

Tomorrow’s final sees Kjaersfeldt take on top seed and home favourite Tai Tzu Ying. The last time we saw the Dane in a singles final was back at the 2015 Scottish Grand Prix, where she broke Scottish hearts and defeated Kirsty Gilmour in three tight sets.

Not to be for Jorgensen

The last match of the session saw Jan O. Jorgensen lose a thrilling contest to Japan’s Riichi Takeshita 21-17, 16-21, 26-24.

Despite Jorgensen coming into this match as the favourite,it was Takeshita that was looking for the upset early on as he produced a strong end to the opening set to take it 21-17.

That moment seemed to spur on the experienced Dane as he came out strong, pulled away to a comfortable lead and maintained to take us to a decider.

The third set saw both players bring out their ‘A-game’ and leads were exchanged on many occasions. As we got to the tail end of the match,Jorgensen looked to be pulling away. But Takeshita kept responding well to eventually extend the set beyond the regulation length.

But after both players each having two match points, it was Takeshita ending up prevailing and the third time of asking.
