Huge possibilites
Aidan Jones has been a volunteer writer for more than one year. Now, the Englishman and sports journalism student is doing an internship for ten months in the head office of Badminton Europe in Brøndby, Denmark:

- There are so many advantages of being a volunteer writer. The main one for me, was getting an internship at Badminton Europe. I have only been at the office for one month now and I have learnt so much. So, I am looking forward to what I will learn in ten months.

- It will also give me the required experience in the field for when I graduate and want to apply for jobs.

Aidan Jones became a volunteer writer for Badminton Europe via his university course. A number of students was sent to the All-England tournament in 2016 to help the media at Badminton England.

- I spoke to several journalists at the tournament. One of them was Rasmus Bech, Communication Manager at Badminton Europe. He asked if I would be interested in writing for the site on a voluntary basis. As I am work driven, it was perfect for me and I took the offer.

Volunteer writing as a step for your journalism career
Richard Jones, Senior Lecturer of Journalism and Media at the University of Huddersfield, approves that volunteer writing is important for people who intend to build a career in journalism:

- Voluntary writing can be an important way to develop your skills early in your career, without too much pressure. It is a good time to be able to find your own writing style and voice, as well as experiencing the excitement of seeing your work published.

Furthermore, Richard Jones underlines the importance of a good portfolio for becoming a journalist:

- Having a good portfolio of published work is important for students as they move through their studies. Doing a university degree in journalism or media is not just about what you learn in class, it is about putting those skills into practice any way you can.

- Writing for websites on a voluntary basis is one way in which students can build their portfolios, which can be used later to secured paid internships as well as freelance and eventually full-time work.

Aidan Jones already collected work samples for his upcoming career as a journalist. A good decision to take the internship at Badminton Europe, according to his lecturer, Richard Jones:

- It is very important for journalism students to gain work experience. The media is a competitive world. So, it is important that you take every opportunity that opens to you, both on the university campus, as well as on the professional organisations side.

New experiences
Aidan Jones decided to take a sandwich year from university to gain work samples and experiences as a sports journalist at Badminton Europe.

- It is good to interview different players and people in the sport. I interviewed Johnathan Dolan, a Center of Excellence player once. I got on with him so well that it made me want to continue. Thus, I was seriously thinking about taking a year out of university to work in the sport’s industry.

If you want to get a chance, such as Aidan Jones did, we are looking forward to hearing from you. Send us your CV and a short news article about any badminton topic by October 22th or as soon as possible. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
