Victor Svendsen just turned 23 in August, and the Danish youngster already has a successful career to boast. The badminton talent is the current number one in Europe and number 55 in the world.

Badminton Europe spoke with him about his long-term goals, his game style and his training sessions with Viktor Axelsen.

Recently second placed in the men’s singles at the Belgian International, winner of the Czech International as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Portuguese International in March. Those are the youngest successes of Danish player Victor Svendsen.

Now, the 23-year-old is selected for playing in the Danish national team.

- I am very happy to play for my home country. I wanted to show that I am willing to practise hard, and now I am happy to get a spot in the national team.

A new year’s goal
The men’s singles player is currently the 55th best in the world and the best in the BEC Circuits. But the Danish player is not relying on his success, instead, he is ambitious and hard-working:

- I have a big goal that I want to reach before the new year: Being in the Top 50 of the world ranking. But I play one match at a time. So, I think from match to match while trying to improve.

Learning from the best
And Victor Svendsen’s efforts have been rewarded: He is part of team Denmark and practices with top players such as the number one in the world, Viktor Axelsen, as well as Jan Ø Jørgensen and Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus.

- It is nice to practise with the best Danish players in the world. All of them are very good guys and I enjoy to playing with them.

- Just watching Viktor playing and practising with him helps me to improve my game style. He is very professional and does nearly everything right.

A game style à la Svendsen
Learning from the top players might inspire Victor Svendsen in his game style. However, the singles player is unique in his way of playing badminton:

- I’m more specialised in a flat game and a bit more in double style. But in general, I have my own way of playing and cannot compare that to current top players.

The next tournament in 2018 that Victor Svendsen is participating in, is the Dutch Open in October. And the player has big goals for the future:

- I would love to be in the Danish national team fulltime. Then I am able to go to the super series to fight for medals. But what is most important for me is having fun with badminton. I love this sport and I want to enjoy it.
