Marin extends winning streak as Adcock’s and Stoeva’s also progress

Spain’s Carolina Marin makes it ten consecutive wins after coming through her first round match against Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt 21-13, 21-13 at the China Open in Changzhou.

It was a battling performance by the Danish underdog. But when it came to the final stages of each set, the Women’s Singles Olympic Champion showed great strength in completing the straight sets victory.

Elsewhere in the women’s singles, Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour suffered a tough 21-18, 21-9 defeat to Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi. After losing a narrow opening set, Gilmour’s Japanese opponent looked comfortable after that and quickly secured a place into round two.

After an early exit in last week’s Japan Open, England’s Chris and Gabrielle Adcock look set to improve on that effort after recovering well to defeat Ireland’s Sam and Chloe Magee in a battle between couples and siblings.

The first set saw the English pair battle back from a 15-9 deficit. But the Magee’s managed to hold their nerve to win the first set.After that, the eighth seeds showed a lot of determination and quickly turned the match around to complete the comeback.

Meanwhile there were some narrow losses in the mixed doubles for England’s Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith, Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich as well as Denmark’s Niclas Nohr and Sara Thygesen. As for Russia’s Rodion Alimov and Alina Davletova, they were seen off by fourth seeded Hong Kong pair Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet 21-14, 21-19.

Stoeva’s impress

It was a quick session for Bulgaria’s Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva as they swiftly saw off Thai pair Thanapim Kaweenuntavong and Peeraya Khantaruangskul 21-15, 21-7.

The only other European participants competing today were Germany’s Linda Efler and Isabel Herttrich. They unfortunately were comfortably seen off by Chinese pair Wenjing Dong and Xueying Feng 21-15, 21-16. After building an early lead in both sets, Dong and Feng maintained it and Efler and Herttrich could not close the gap for the entire contest.

It was a bad day in the men’s singles and doubles.

Denmark’s Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding suffered an upset defeat to Indonesia’s Berry Angriawan and Hardianto Hardianto in three tight sets 22-20, 11-21, 21-16.

The first set saw Conrads-Petersen and Kolding rue missed chances as they had four set points. However, it was their Indonesian opponents that came back to snatched the first set. But after the perfect response by the Danish sixth seeds to take it to a decider, Angriawan and Hardianto ended with a strong finish to topple the seeded pair.

Also going out in the men’s doubles were Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov. They went out to two narrow sets to China’s Han Chengkai and Zhou Haodong 21-18, 21-16.

In the men’s singles, there were straight set defeats for Dutchman Mark Caljouw, Frenchman Brice Leverdez, Dane Rasmus Gemke as well as a heart-breaking three-set loss for Anders Antonsen.
