German youngster Simon Wang failed to qualify for the main draw of YONEX-SUNRISE Vietnam Open in Ho Chi Minh City.

After a straight sets win over Malaysia’s Yu Ming Adam Lau,Wang lost in the afternoon session to Indonesian teenager Gatjra Piliang Fiqihila Cupu in what was the final round of qualifying.

Earlier in the day, Wang began his campaign with a strong start against Lau. After easily taking the first 21-10, the second was far from it. With both players exchanging the lead throughout the set, it was not until at 16-16 when Wang pulled away and won the last five points.

After a brief interest, it was back to work for Wang as one more win would see the German progress to the main draw. But despite a swift comeback halfway through the opening set, Indonesian opponent Cupu prevailed in the opener 21-16.

Set number two was looking to be another close one. But after being level at 4-4, Cupu only lost six points out of the next 23 to confirm the second set 21-10.
