Kento Momota becomes the first Japanese man in history to win a gold medal at the World Championships.

This adds to his Asia Championship that he won in April this year. Since then, Momota has continued his great form, reaching 2 tournament finals. And in Nanjing, resulting from several notable withdrawals, his route to today’s final was a simple one for him.

The number 6 seed was a class above his opponent from China, Shi Yuqi. And despite the loud support of the home fans, he could not match the almost perfect fusion of precision and accuracy from the 23-year-old Japanese superstar. Could this be the beginning of a new era of dominance?
