The winning pair then was Etsuko Toganoo and Emiko Uena, and after 41 years for Japan, the names Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara will too be remembered forever. 

In the final, this history was guaranteed for Japan, since the opposing pair were no other than number 2 seeds, Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota. Who were the big favourites going into this final, as they were silver medallists last year and held a 3-0 head to head with their compatriots.

But it was the 11th seeds who held their nerve in a marathon match that went all the way. The 1 hour 35-minute match ended 19-21, 21-19, 22-20, with Fukushima and Hirota agonisingly squandering two championship points at the very end.
