In the women's singles qualifying round, there was plenty of Russian interest, including Sofila Doroshenko who is seeded fourth in the qualification process, but it was Japan, USA and South Korea who won in emphatic style to qualify for the main draw. Moto Hayashi of Japan defeated Russian player Ekaterina Riazantceva 21-5 21-7, and will join fellow Japanese player Kie Nakanishi tomorrow in the main draw. Iris Wang from the United states had to fight off Ji Hye Lee from South Korea in a grueling battle, eventually winning 17-21 21-19 21-18 to secure a place in the main draw. Finally, San Eun Park of South Korea is the fourth and final qualifier for the Women's Singles main draw.

Meanwhile, the men's singles kicked off with round one in Sport Hall Olympic. With a variety of nationalities competing in this year's event, the top eight seeded players were awarded byes into the second round. Kicking off their campaign as the first men's singles match on court, Russia's Dmitrii Riabov defeated England's Hin Shun Wong 21-10 21-16 before India's Mithun Manjuntah overcame Germany's Elias Bracke 21-14 21-13. 

Other Europeans who found success in the men's singles on day one includes Luka Wraber of Austria, who defeated Russia’s Alexey Panov in emphatic style 21-2 21-6, along with England's Chun Kar Lung and Wang Yuehang who overcame their Russian opponents. Russia's Sergey Sirant and Ilya Kamyshenkoc were also able to impress in front of a home crowd as they both won to take them through to the second round.
