Germany’s Isabel Herttrich and Carla Nelte came out as the only European winners on day three of the Singapore Open.

Their 21-15, 21-17 win over England’s Jessica Pugh and Lauren Smith takes into the quarter finals and the sole European representative in all competitions.

Seeds fall

Meanwhile, it was a bad day for the European seeds in the mixed doubles. It was heart-breaking defeats all-round for English pairs Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith, Chris and Gabrielle Adcock as well as Germany’s Marvin Emil Seidel and Linda Efler.

Also going out in the mixed doubles, were Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich, who fell in three-sets to Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari 13-21, 21-14, 21-15.

The narrow defeats kept on coming in the women’s singles, as Spain’s Beatriz Corrales could not quite get past Chinese Taipei’s Chen Su Yu 20-22, 21-12, 22-20.

Sadly for England’s Chloe Birch, it was a quicker afternoon in her 21-13, 21-16 to second seed Thai player Nitchaon Jindapol.

There was a big opportunity for an upset in the women’s doubles for England’s Chloe Birch and Jenny Moore. After narrowly missing out on the first set, the English pair ending up falling to Thai top seeded pair Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai 22-20, 21-16.

It was a similar story for Germany’s Johanna Goliszewski andLara Kaepplein who lost 23-21, 21-15 to Hong Kong’s Ng Tsz Yau/Yuen Sin Ying.

The last European involvement to mention is in the men’s doubles. It ended with a couple straight set defeat English pairs Peter Briggs and Tom Wolfenden, along with Ben Lane and Sean Vendy.
