It was a memorable day for England’s Jessica Pugh and Lauren Smith, who managed to topple women’s doubles second seeded Indonesian pair Della Destiara Haris and Rizki Amelia Pradipta in straight sets at the Singapore Open.

After losing an early first set lead, Pugh and Smith finished the first set well to win it 21-17. Set number two saw another strong start by the English pair. However, they managed to maintain that form to take the victory in straight sets 21-17, 21-17.

There was more English success in the women’s doubles, as Chloe Birch and Jenny Moore turned it around in their three-set victory over Hong Kong’s Ng Wing Yung and Yeung Nga Ting 13-21, 21-17, 21-16.

The European wins kept on coming during the day, as Germany also booked a couple of places into round two. An impressive straight sets wins for Isabel Herttrich and Carla Nelte was certainly a big highlight. Meanwhile,Johanna Goliszewski and Lara Kaepplein recovered to defeat Indonesia’s Yulfira Barkah and Rosyita Eka Putri Sari in three sets 21-17, 17-21, 21-16.

It was not a good day for France or Italy, as all of their representatives fell in straight sets today. The most notable being French seventh seeded women’s doubles pair Emilie Lefel and Anne Tran. Their 21-16,21-15 defeat to China’s Cao Tong Wei and Zheng Yu saw the French number one pair unexpectedly depart in round one.

Also falling at the first hurdle in the women’s doubles were France’s Delphine Delrue and Lea Palermo and Italy’s Silvia Garino and Lisa Iversen. It was a heart-breaking afternoon for Delrue and Palermo as they narrowly lost to Indonesia’s Putri Sari Dewi Citra and Yujia Jin 27-25, 14-21,22-20. It was a much shorter outing for Garino and Iversen, who lost 21-10,21-11 to Thai top seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rwainda Prajongjai.

The English wins kept on coming in the men’s doubles, as Ben Lane and Sean Vendy as well as Peter Briggs and Tom Wolfenden secured straight set wins over Indian and Thai opponents respectively.

There was an upset for German fourth seeded pair Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Emil Seidel. After quickly collecting the first set 21-9,Hong Koong opponents Chung Yonny and Team Chun Hei turned it around spectacularly to take the second and third sets 21-17, 22-20.

There were also straight set losses for France and Italian pairs Thom Gicquel and Bastian Kersaudy, and Fabio Caponio and Giovanni Toti.

Only one win was recorded in the singles, at that came from England’s Chloe Birch, who held her nerve to defeat China’s Zhang Yiman 21-15,22-20.

Elsewhere, there were a couple of three-set defeats for England’s Toby Penty, Spain’s Pablo Abian and Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri. Losing in straight sets were France’s Lucas Corvee and Germany’s Fabienne Deperez. It was a short outing for Switzerland’s Sabrina Jaquet, who had to retire eight points into her first set with Singapore’s Kean Yew Loh.

It was a rough day in the mixed doubles, as there ended up being a couple of three-set losses.

Despite taking the first set 21-10, French pair Bastian Kersaudy and Lea Palermo could not carry on their momentum as Indonesian opponents Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari regrouped to take sets two and three 21-17, 21-15.

It was a similar situation for Germany’s Jones Ralfy Jansen and Carla Nelte in their defeat to India’s eighth seeded pair Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Reddy Sikki. After losing the first set 21-19, Jansen and Nelte levelled the contest after taking the second set 21-16. Sadly for them, Chopra and Sikki turned it around and took the decider 21-12.
