Moving on from the Thailand Open, the 2018 Singapore Open gets underway on the 17th July, with a large contingent of European players making the trip from Bangkok to Singapore, spearheaded by the Thai Mixed Doubles runners up, Chris and Gabby Adcock.

In a strong mens singles category there are three Europeans in the men’s singles main draw.

Lucas Corvee from France plays a qualifier in the first round. Corvee was runner-up in the Mediterranean Games in Spain last month, where he lost to fellow European Pablo Abian from Spain.

In Singapore, Pablo Abian is drawn against Jen Hao Hsu from Chinese Taipei. Abian also won the White Nights tournament in Russia at the beginning of July, so he comes into this tournament with his confidence very high.

Finally, left hander Toby Penty starts his tournament with a tricky first round match against the second seed Angus Ng Ka Long from Hong Kong. In form Penty recently got to the quarter finals in Canada and will be looking forward to this tough challenge.

Plenty of action in women’s singles

In the women’s singles, 31-year-old Sabrina Jaquet from Switzerland has a first round match against a qualifier, followed by a probable encounter with the number one seed and world number four Ratchanok Intanon, Thailand. 

Other notable European women in the main draw include 30-year-old Bulgarian Linda Zetchiri from Sofia. Zetchiri was forced to retire in the Spanish International recently, but played last week in Bangkok.

Meanwhile Spain’s number two Beatriz Corrales plays a qualifier in the first round, while German Fabienne Deprez will face Chen Su Yu from Chinese Taipei.

Germans seeded four

Looking ahead to the Men's Doubles, a real chance to progress through the tournament goes to the number four seeds from Germany, Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel. 

The Germans are ranked 20 in the world and were recent runners up in the Canadian Open.

In women’s doubles there is a strong European interest, spearheaded by the number seven seeds, Emilie Lefel and Anne Tran from France. The 2018 European Championship runners-up Lefel and Tran play Chinese Tong Wei CAO and Yu Zheng in the first round.

Italy’s Silvia Garino and Lisa Iversen face a tricky first round tie against the top seeds, whilst England’s Jess Pugh and Lauren Smith face the second seeds from Indonesia.

Strong European Mixed Doubles Pairs

It is probably in the Mixed Doubles that pairs from Europe have the strongest chance of victory. Following on from their success in Thailand, Chris and Gabby Adcock start as fourth seeds, just behind Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith who are seeded three. 

Two German pairs are fifth and sixth seeds, Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich, who finished as runners up in their last tournament in Canada, and Marvin Seidel and Linda Efler who reached the semi-finals of the same tournament.
