Beatriz Monteiro and Diogo Daniel are the very first Portugese para-badminton players classified by the BWF Classification team at the FZ FORZA Irish Para-Badminton International tournament in Dublin, Ireland (19-14 June 2018).

Monteiro was classified in the SU5 Sport Class while Daniel was classified in SL4. Despite competing in an international scene for the first time, these young and budding players proved that age is not a barrier for them. Their maiden appearance in a BWF International tournament was truly a memorable one when they both achieved results above the expectation of their coaches and team manager.

When there is a will

Even though they competed against more experienced and mature players, they were still able to perform. Monteiro, at the tender age of 12 ended her first tournament in third placing in the Women´s Singles SU5 while Daniel, aged 15 finished second in his group and was among the top 16 players in Men´s Singles in SL4.

“I would like to share my pleasure and proud for the goals achieved, in this extremely positive and enriching experience. Personally, I don’t have words to express how I felt to watch this tournament, not only because the Portuguese athletes were playing but also because of sense of competition focus, always with a remarkable fair play between all delegations and athletes,” shared Carlos Paiva, Team Manager of the Portugese Para-Badminton National Team.

The support of Badminton Europe

“It is worth noting also how essential it was for us with Badminton Europe´s support. With Beatriz, the recipient of the “BEC Women in Badminton Scholarship” and with Marco Clemente, our physiotherapist who attended the “BWF Para-Badminton National Classifier Workshop” in Dublin. These initiatives are truly essential for our Federation’s para-badminton development,” added Paiva.

Looking forward

These were just the first steps of the journey towards bigger and ambitious goals. For all of this, being in Dublin made us even more ambitious. Besides being motivated to participate in other international tournaments, we would like to work even harder so that in the future, we will have conditions to host an international tournament in Portugal, which would allow a major promotion of Portuguese para-badminton. This will for sure bring more athletes to para-badminton," Paiva on their long term goals.

The next para-badminton tournament is the BWF Thailand Para-Badminton International which will take place from 23-29 July 2018. The BEC Women in Badminton Scholarship application for new female para-badminton players is still open. To know more about the application process, click here.
