Olympic women’s singles champion Caroline Marin survives a scare after coming through Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the opening round of the Malaysia Open in Bukit Jalil.

In what was in the end a rather strange match, the Spaniard came through in three sets 21-4, 18-21, 21-8 to move into the second round where she’ll take on Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi, who took out Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour 21-10, 21-16.

In the men’s and women’s doubles, there were wins for Denmark in the form of Mathias Christiansen and David Daugaard, Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen as well as Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen.

Christiansen and Daugaard made quick work of South Korea’s Chung Eui Seok and Kim Dukyoung 21-12, 21-12. As for Fruergaard and Thygesen,it was a slight tougher affair in their 21-11, 21-18 victory of fellow Dane Alexandra Boje and New Zealand playing partner Gronya Somerville.

Ending the day’s proceedings was a neat come back by Astrup and Rasmussen in their 19-21, 24-22, 21-12 win over Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi.

There was also some guaranteed European success in the men’s singles today. Progressing to round two is France’s Brice Leverdez, who came through a thrilling encounter against Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Soldberg Vittinghus in three sets 16-21, 21-11, 21-16.

There were a couple of tough defeats in the men’s doubles. The most notable being the loss of Denmark’s Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding. The tournament’s fifth seeds fell in surprisingly comfortable fashion to China’s Huang Kaixiang and Wang Yilyu 21-13, 21-12.

There was also a heart-breaking defeat for Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov. After recovering well in the second set, they could not quite create the upset of defeating Liu Cheng and Zhang Nan, as the Chinese third seeded pair escaped in three-sets 21-13, 19-21, 25-23.

Elsewhere, there were losses in the men’s singles for Jan O.Jorgensen and Rasmus Gemke.

Despite showing some fight in the first set, it was quick afternoon for Jorgensen in the men’s singles as he fell 21-18, 21-9 to Indian fourth seed Srikanth Kidambi.

Just before that on the neighbouring court, fellow Dane Rasmus Gemke put in a strong display and matched Chinese Taipei sixth seed Chou Tien Chen for the majority of the match. Sadly, Gemke could not do enough to topple his higher-ranked opponent, and Chen came out victorious 21-19, 21-17.
