The European players battling in Calgary, Canada this week had a great day of results. Many taking out seeds on their way into the next round.

The highlights being in the Men’s and Women’s singles where Kim Bruun of Denmark and Yvonne Li of Germany, both took out the number 3 seed in their draw. Bruun, ranked 79 in the world, was able to beat Brazilian Ygor Coelho who is 46 ranking places higher, in 2 straight games, 21-16, 21-14. And it was in very similar fashion that Li was able to dispatch Kim Hyo Min of Korea, who sits 50 ranking places higher than her. But again, the German was able to win in a simple 2 games, 21-17, 21-15.

Three, is perhaps the unlucky number, as the 3rd seeds also perished in the Men’s Doubles. Germans Jonas Jansen and Josche Zurwonne lost in straight games, 21-18, 21-18 to English pair Sean Vendy and Ben Lane, who consolidated their win against the Germans at last year’s Scottish Grand Prix.

A number of brief scares
Following our seeded European players, we had a number of brief scares where they were taken all the way to 3 games with thrilling ends to the matches. Dutch number 7 seeds Robin Tabeling and Cheryl Seinen in the Mixed Doubles had to endure a high pressure 18-21, 21-10, 21-18 match against Swedes Richard Eidstedt and Clara Nistad.

Also, from the Netherlands, the US Open finalist and number 2 seed, Mark Caljouw went through a gruelling 3 game match against the talented Japanese player, Hashiru Shimono, 15-21, 21-18, 21-17. Perhaps finally feeling the effects of last week.

And number 6 seeds, Ben Lane and Jessica Pugh, prevented a dream result for the home Canadian pair of Adam Dong and Olivia Lei, with a nail-biting ending; 17-21, 21-8, 21-19.
