Badminton Denmark has, as the first badminton association in the world, made a long-term event strategy to attract the world’s biggest badminton events to Denmark before 2030. Here amongst Thomas & Uber Cup Finals, Sudirman Cup, Junior World Championships and the individual World Championships.

Every year, Badminton Denmark conducts, in cooperation with sponsors and collaborators, DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR - one of the world’s four biggest tournaments, measured on prize money.

But during the next 12 years it is very possible that even more world class badminton is coming to Denmark. That is, if it is up to Badminton Denmark, who has as the first association in the world produced a long-term event strategy to attract the world’s biggest badminton events to Denmark.

- Several of the big international championships are separately bad business to organize, and we have no intentions of taking on events that with big possibility will result in a deficit and damage the association and its’ members and additional activities. That is why we have made a strategy where we not only bid on a single championship, but, instead, on a package of championships until 2030, which means it will be the combined financial means that we will consider, says Badminton Denmark CEO, Bo Jensen.

Badminton Denmark has created the long-term event strategy in collaboration with Sport Event Denmark. The two organisations will now prepare a plan for which package of champions they are going to bid for. One thing that is certain is that to begin with, they will bid on the individual World Championships in 2022, and, that the association hopefully can mark its’ 100th anniversary with the individual World Championships in 2030.

The championships that Badminton Denmark wishes to bid for in a joint package are the following: Thomas & Uber Cup Finals (World Championships for men’s & women’s teams), Sudirman Cup (World Championships for mixed teams), Junior World Championships, Para-Badminton World Championships, Senior World Championships, and, the individual World Championships.

Badminton Denmark and Sport Event Denmark must have an extensive list of practical things in place to be able to make the bids. Here amongst, hosting cities, agreements with sponsors and deals with TV. It is essentially important that the gathered funding is in place, before we bid, Bo Jensen establishes.

The long-term strategic approach to bidding for championships was presented to the BWF by Badminton Denmark in Bangkok, in connection to the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals. The proposals were received positively but no promises were made.

Badminton Denmark expects to be able to present the first part of the strategy, the period from 2020 to 2025, to the BWF within the next couple of months. The other half, the period until 2030, is set to be final in 2022.

Denmark has hosted the individual World Championships in 2014, 1999, 1991 and 1983 including Sudirman Cup in 1991 and 1999. Denmark has never hosted the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals.
