Danish Veterans Anders Kristiansen and Julie Houmann continue to prove their undoubted world class ability this afternoon in Mülheim in what turned out to be the match of the day in the mixed doubles semi-final against England’s Chris Adcock and Gabby White.

The dynamic Danish duo came out on top in a match that had everything from excitement to intrigue with a high content of class thrown in the mix for good measure.  In front of a packed house with every one of the 2500 seats occupied by noisy, excited Germans, the Danes gave a master class in world class mixed doubles as they defeated the improving Adcock and White by the narrowest of margins 21-19 19-21 21-19.

In the end experience and calm heads on old shoulders came out on top as Houmann and Kristiansen rolled of four points without reply to take the match in the deciding rubber.

“There was times out there where I got a bit frustrated by Julie has a calming influence over me at these times but that’s me and the way I play and when I am on court I play badminton with my emotions”

Speaking about their chances in tomorrow’s final Houmann was swift in shifting the weight of expectation onto their final opponents Shin Baek Choel and Jang Ye Na from Korea. “We will be the underdogs for sure in tomorrow’s final and they pressure will be on them to win”

The loudest cheer of the day came as world number 3 and home favourite Juliane Schenk powered home in two closely run sets against Japan’s rising star Sayaka Takahashi.

The German took a close opening set 21-17 after being pushed as hard as she has been this week by the technically excellent Takahashi. “The first game was close as she played some amazing strokes but I got a run of points at the end and it was a big relief to win the first set”

The second set was as close as the first and the Japanese looked like she had the match of Schenk leading 19-18 but as if turning an overdrive switch when faced with a steep hill, the German was able to regroup and re focus and find a new gear to take the match with three unanswered points 21-18.

“That was a tough battle against a quality player. The long rally at 16-14 was a key point and of course the crowd had a huge part to play in today’s victory” said a relieved Schenk after her victory.
