The Turkish Para-Badminton International came to a close this evening, with 3 gold medals coming back to Europe in a field largely dominated by fierce Asian competition.

Niall McVeigh comes home tonight from Turkey with gold around his neck and a spring in his step after winning the SS6 men’s singles title at the 4th Enes Cup.

The Irishman destroyed the competition in Konya this week, without dropping a single game to take his first international titles since his home event in 2015. He had this to say about the win

“I’m very proud to win my first singles title in 3 years. It was a solid performance all week and I’m already looking forward to the Irish next month where I hope to develop from this”

A surprise result to claim silver was Yohei Hatakeyama (JPN) who had a great week, defeating Alexander Mekhdiev (RUS) and also Fabien Morat (FRA) to challenge McVeigh for the title.

What a difference a year makes

As a marker for comparison to the difference in strength of competition at this year’s Turkish International, we should take a look at the SU5 category.

In 2017 Poland’s Bartlomiej Mroz, the world number 3 came away with both SU5 men’s singles and doubles titles and Zehra Baglar (TUR) took the women’s singles title, among a total of 8 European gold medals.

This week Mroz falls in the quarter finals to Turkey’s Ilker Tuzcu who went on the claim silver, and the women’s singles medals were entirely dominated by Japanese players

Lucas Mazur takes another singles gold

Lucas Mazur (FRA) makes in consecutive SL4 men’s singles titles today by winning the Turkish International title following his win in Dubai last month. The Frenchman was on fine form on the singles court, taking gold without dropping a game this week and performed well in the final today beating Lalinakere Yathiraj Suhas (IND) 21-10, 21-19.

Sadly for Mazur he couldn’t carry the same form with partner Faustine Noel in the SL3-SU5 mixed doubles, falling in the quarter final 21-19, 21-14 to a strong Japanese pair Daisuke Fujihara and Mamiko Toyoda.

“I felt grateful on court this week! It wasn’t my best badminton in mixed doubles and I’m very sad to have lost in the quarter finals. But the essential is in singles with this great result.. To beat India’s number 1 in the final is a great step forward on the road to the Europeans later this year”.
