BWF has honoured Peter Ganes with the Meritorious Service Award. Following a recommendation from Badminton Danmark, BWF has awarded Peter Ganes a MSA for his outstanding services to badminton both as an umpire and as an educator and assessor of Danish and international umpires.

Peter Ganes started umpiring in 1983, and his obvious talent quickly took him through the rank of Badminton umpires in Denmark and Europe so that he became a BWF Certificated Umpire in 1995, the highest grade in the world. Even among these, he was one of the very best. Peter umpired Olympic finals in Sydney and Athens before he took early retirement from the umpire's chair in 2006. He remains a role model for umpires worldwide.

However, BWF honour him more than anything for his contribution to the education and training of Danish and European umpires. With Preben Nøies, Peter Ganes has for more than 20 years been instrumental in training all Danish international umpires and it is to his credit that Denmark now has more and better international umpires than ever before. He is chairman of the Danish Umpire Assessors since 2011.

Peter's personal qualities as an umpire and his ability to train and assess umpires is also  noticed outside Denmark, and Peter Ganes has been a BEC Umpire Assessor since BEC started formal assessments. He was also a BWF Umpire Assessor for several years until 2015.

While it is well known that Danish players are among the best in world, it may not be quite as widely acknowledged that Danish umpires equally have been recognized as among the very best. From Paul Frimodt and Villy Larsen, over Preben Nøies and Peter Ganes to those who serve the top tournaments today.  It is to a large degree thanks to Peter Ganes' talent as a teacher and mentor that there will be Danish umpires in the chair in top badminton for many years to come.
