Looking through the history of the European Women’s Team Championships there is one single result that sticks out: The German victory in 2012. The German pulled off the big surprise in Amsterdam beating Denmark in the final. On February 18th they had the chance again.
In the first women’s singles Denmark was favorite Mia Blichfeldt playing against Fabienne Deprez, but it was the German who got the best opening of the first game, and the World number 52 took it 21-15.
The first surprise of the final came already in the first match of the tie. Fabienne Deprez won second game 21-15.

Dominating double
Once again Germany made switches in their women’s doubles. Isabel Herttrich and Olga Konon were chosen for the first women’s doubles, but the World ranked number 3 from Denmark, Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen was too strong for the German. Denmark equalized winning 21-15 21-10.
- When we struggle a bit, we were good not losing too many points and when we felt in control, it looked hard for the girls on the other side, Christinna Pedersen says.

In the second women’s singles Germany once again got a good start. Luise Heim won the first game against Line Kjærsfeldt 21-16.

In the second game it was a one-way traffic for Line Kjærsfeldt. The Danish World number 35 won 21-8 and in the decider the momentum was Danish. Line Kjærsfeldt beat Heim 21-13 in the third game giving Denmark the 2-1 lead.
All or nothing for Germany. Johanna Goliszewski and Carla Nelte had to win against Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen to keep the golden dream alive for Germany but is was the Danes who won the first game 21-19.
The German Olympians tried, but the Danes were too good. Fruergaard and Thygesen won the second game 21-14
The 2012 victory was not to be repeated, and Denmark claimed their 5th European Women’s Team Championships gold medale.
