Team Championships hosts prepare to put on a show for their home crowd.

After making their debut in 2006, Russia’s involvement in the Men’s and Women’s European Team Championships has been integral to their rise up the rankings in all competitions over the last twelve years.

With having at least one representative currently in the world’s top 60 of each competition, Russia are gradually becoming a well-established Badminton nation.

The right signs
The first signs of Russia becoming a contender came in 2012 in Amsterdam, with the men’s team finishing fourth and the women’s third. Two years later saw the nations best result. While the men got knocked out in the quarter-finals by eventual champions Denmark, the women broke new ground and reached the final. Notable victories over France and Germany at the Basel event eventually saw them comfortably lose to Denmark.

Sadly 2016 saw both teams failing to reach the semi-finals. But head coach Claudia Mayorova is confident of a strong showing in front of their home crowd.

After watching the talent in the Russian Badminton Cup a couple of weeks ago, Mayorova spoke to the National Badminton Federation Of Russia. “Our strongest players have shown their level, and this was positive to see. I was happy to see our young players shine, particularly in the men’s doubles. With the European Team Championships not far away, we will look to train hard and improve our form from last time.”

Local 'poster boys'
Leading the way are men’s doubles pair and world number eight, Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov. Winning the men’s doubles at the Russian Open and winning all of their respective matches in the Mixed Team Championships last year puts Ivanov and Sozonov look more than likely to be the poster boys of the event. We expect to see Konstantin Abramov and Alexandr Zinchenko compete.

Aiming to compete in the women’s doubles are world number 24 Anastasia Chervyakova and Olga Morozova. With reaching the semi-finals of last year’s European Championships being a particular highlight of the last 12 months, their presence will add the intention of Russia’s aim for success at this event that is now celebrating its seventh edition.

Looking to join them are world number 46 Ekaterina Bolotova and Alina Davletova. We also expect to see Vladimir Malkov and Sergey Sirant in the men’s singles, Evgeniya Kosetskaya and Natalia Perminova in the women’s singles.

Russia will be the fourth seeds in both the men’s and women’s competitions. The men have been drawn into group 4, along with Bulgaria, Spain and Belgium. As for the women, their group consists of Turkey, Estonia and Latvia. The event begins on February 13th and ends on the 18th and it all takes place at the Gymnastics Centre in Kazan.
