Germany’s leading men’s singles for many years played his last international tournament in August last year, but the German nomination form for the upcoming team championships in Kazan had the former team captain’s name on it.

- I’m expecting to play in Kazan and excited to be able to help the German team one more time, said Zwiebler when Badminton Europe reached out to him about the nomination.

Other men’s singles that are nominated for the German team at the 2018 European Men’s Team Championships are Fabian Roth, Kai Schaefer, Alexander Roovers, Lars Schaenzler and Max Weisskirchen.

Who the final team will consist of is still unknown but Zwiebler has reported ready for duty for his nation. Germany’s men’s team is in group 3 along with Iceland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan.

Goal is to qualify
As a part of the oldest players in the squad, the European champion from 2012 will have the role to bring his experience to his team mates.

- Our goal is to qualify for Bangkok. Except me, we are a very young team with great potential but lack of experience.

When asked about if he will join the team at Thomas Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, if they qualify, Zwiebler answered: - We will see. I don’t know yet, but first we concentrate on qualifying. I would love to play in Asia one more time.

Jan’s comeback?
Another popular player is also to be found on the list of nominated players for Kazan next month. The Danish men’s singles player Jan Ø. Jørgensen writes on his Facebook page that he is back in the hall, which means he is likely to get his comeback for the Danish team in Russia.

Jørgensen has been injured with a heel spur in the right heel for a longer period of time, and the last international tournament that he played was the Superseries Australian Open in June 2017.

Badminton Denmark announced in a press release late last year that the men’s singles players for the event will, besides Jørgensen, be Anders Antonsen, Rasmus Gemke and Emil Holst. Badminton Europe is excited to welcome all the nominated players in Kazan from 13-18 February.
