The world ranking list was published today, for the first time in 2018. After the holiday COE players Matej Hlinican (Slovakia) and Gerda Voitechovskaja (Lithuania) are back to Holbaek, Denmark where, together with the other players from the “Centre of Excellence”, they will continue training and working hard towards their goals.

Matej Hlinican from Slovakia is ranked no. 175 on men’s singles world ranking list. Talking about last year, Matej was not so satisfied with his performances:
- I made some good results but every time I came close to beat a good player I was not able to take it and that is what bothers me the most.

With the goals of qualifying for the European Championships and World Championships, Matej aims to progress into top 120 in the world. For 2018, he believes he will perform better by learning from his mistakes.

-Not just to be able to play even matches with good players but also to start beating them and holding my A level game for a longer time – this is the main focus for me, Matej tells Badminton Europe.

COE player aiming higher in women’s singles

Gerda Voitechovskaja from Lithuania is currently ranked no. 200 on women’s singles world ranking list. In her words, 2017 was not the best year for her regarding her performances:
- I didn’t reach my goals and went down in the ranking. So I can’t say 2017 was a good year for me.

However, Gerda has an important task to achieve in the middle of February when she plays in the European women’s team championships in Kazan, Russia.
- My main goal now is to prepare for European women’s team championships and try to help my team to win as many games as possible.

As for her tournaments, she aims to have more victories and going forward, reaching higher ranks at the same time.
-It would be good for me to reach my best ranking position (no. 154) and go even higher. It would be perfect for me, Gerda tells Badminton Europe.
