The experienced duo of Carsten Mogensen and Mathias Boe from Denmark finished strong after a shaky start against Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi from Japan.
As the world no. 2’s, Boe and Mogensen was drawn into to group B and faced their first opponents on Wednesday in Dubai.
The first set was close, and the two pairs accompanied each other all the way up to 18-18, before the Danes finally got away and took the first set 21-18.
And just as it looked like the second set would follow in the footsteps of the first, the Danes got away. From 11-10 to 14-12, and finally at 18-12 the gap became to big. Boe and Mogensen victoried with the score: 21-14.
Adcocks almost got the best of Natsir and Ahmad
Gabrielle and Chris Adcocks from England came on court with lightning and thunder against the experienced Malaysians Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir.
And after two entertaining and well-played sets, 21-18, 18-21, the third got the best of them; 14-21.
Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen won in two sets against Korean Jung and Shin; 21-18, 21-10. On Thursday they face Hsu and Wu from Chinese Taipei on the TV court.
‘Best players of the year’ for a reason
The first Europeans on court were Mads Pieler Kolding and Mads Conrad-Petersen from Denmark. The Indonesian world no. 1’s, Sukamuljo and Gideon, got off to a great start by taking the first set 21-6, and even though the Danes fought back in the second it was not enough to win the match.
The second set’s score ended 16-21, and the Danes must now look ahead for the next challenge, as the Indonesian duo took their second victory in Dubai, also counting the BWF award for best Male Player of the Year.
Viktor Axelsen is the defending champion in Dubai and took a step towards defending his title by winning his first match against Kidambi Srikanth; 21-13, 21-17.
