Over the past couple of days, Badminton Europe’s (BEC) President, Gregory Verpoorten, participated in the first formal EOC Coordination Commission (COCOM) meeting for the European Games in Minsk.

The COCOM has as task to monitor the progress of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MECOG) as well as provide the necessary support and guidance to make the European Games a success.

Badminton is on the program of this multisport event, which is to be held from June 21st to June 30th 2019. A total of 15 sports are lined up for the Games, of which 2 non-Olympic sports.

- It was an interesting few days in Minsk during which MECOG demonstrated that they are getting geared up to deliver great European Games, Badminton Europe President Gregory Verpoorten explains.

Great venues
The COCOM was taken on a venue tour as well as on a tour of the Olympic Village.

- A great asset of Minsk as an organizer is that they have sufficient and very high quality existing sports venues, which means no significant construction works are needed.

Verpoorten represented the European Federation side of the house, together with four fellow European Federation Presidents.

Very promising
- Badminton Europe will closely cooperate with MECOG to make sure the Badminton event will be an outstanding one. The proposed venue for Badminton looks very promising, a brand-new facility which looks like it is purpose made to deliver a top Badminton event.

Badminton Europe experts will soon make a site visit so that we are able to help fine-tune and officially sign off on the plans.

Senior Manager Jimmy Andersen will serve as technical delegate for the event and will closely work with Peter Tarcala, the Chair of the Major Events commission, as well as with the President to ensure our athletes have a great experience in 2019.

- We are currently working with BWF to foresee world ranking points for this event so the event is raised to an Olympic Qualification event for Tokio 2020.

During his visit, the President had the chance to meet up with the VP and the Secretary General of the Belarussian Badminton Federation to start discussing some Development activities leading up to the Games in an attempt to increase the popularity of Badminton in Belarus.

Soon, more information will be made available on this event via BEC’s National Olympic Committee as well as via Badminton Europe directly.
