The French man could have easily been forgiven for capitulating in the third set after letting two match points slip in the second game after winning the first 21-19. In the deciding set Lee raced into a 14-8 eight lead and looked on course to finally shrug off the consistent threat of leverdez biting at his heels. 

In the end that 14-8 lead was to be as good as it got for one of the greats of the game as Leverdez came storming back to level at 17-17 before going on to win the match 21-17. 

“For me this is just another game against a top player that I knew I could win, after all I have done it before.” Said the French man

“I had no pressure I played free and enjoyed the match. Once I enjoy myself and express myself on court I know I can win these games”.

There was to be no giant killing exercise for Hans Kristian Vittinghus however. The Dane once again faced off against Tien Houwei a player he has fallen to on number occasions over the past years. Vittingus will only have himself to blame as he had the win within sight leading 16-12 but the Chinese pounced to rattle off 9 consecutive points to win the match and to leave Vittinghus dejected. 

In one of the last matches of the day Viktor Axelsen had to come back from a set down to beat Japan’s Takuma Ueda to dispel the round one jitters. 

"I really respect Ueda as an opponent. I was slow coming out and he played at a very high pace but I managed to step it up in the second and third game which I have to be pleased about."

Campbell and Machugh keep home flames burning

Martin Campbell and Patrick Machugh (pictured above) produced one of the performances of their career this afternoon in the Emirates beating the improving Jacco Arends and Ruben Jille. The Dutch have impressed this past year and were favourites for the match. 

The Scots, backed by the home support, blasted out of the blocks taking the first set 21-13. Jille and Arends looked to be in control of the second game leading 15-12 and 17-15 but the home pair were not about to let their chance pass them by and won six of the next seven points to set up a glamour match against tenth seeded Russians Ivanov & Sozonov. 

In an all European battle German duo Jansens and Zurwonne were two set victors over Pradzinski and Rudzinski of Poland while Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek kept their partnership alive for at least one more day with a three set win. The Dutch will hang up their rackets as a pair after these championships with Muskens retiring from the sport. 

Magee’s firing on all cylinders

Ireland’s Magee siblings (pictured above) created a mini upset in the mixed doubles taking out Japanese 16th seeds Watanabe and Higashino. At 22 in the world the Japanese would have been expected to advance to the last 16. 

The Irish had other things on their mind however after a year that saw them claim European bronze medal back in April in Denmark. The Irish have grown into their mixed partnership since Chloe’s decision to finish her singles career post Rio.

After sharing the opening sets it was the Irish who held their nerve to come back from 13-8 down in the decider to win 21-15.

“It’s a great feeling to be in the last 16. After yesterday’s miss match in round one we didn’t really know where we are at. It is great so see our level and know our game is with us as to beat this Japanese pair is a big deal for us.” 

As one of only four European pairs left the Irish now go into a nothing to lose last 16 match against Olympic Champions Ahmad an Natsir after the Indonesian’s eased through their opening match in the Emirates.
