Sir Craig Reedie, the former president of Badminton World Federation (BWF) and BadmintonScotland, has been elected as a vice-president of the International Olympic Committee. Reedie has been on the IOC board since 2009.

The Scot, along with the Moroccan Nawal El Moutawakel, was on Thursday elected unopposed to fill two vacancies, moving up from his regular position on the 15-member executive board. He was a key figure in London's winning bid for the 2012 Olympics and his elevation to vice president came just one day before the opening ceremony.

"It's a particular pleasure to be elected to this place in this city, which has taken up so much of my time in recent years," Reedie said to press agency AFP.

Reedie was also a key figure to help badminton to become part of the Olympic programme in 1992.
