11th European Universities Badminton Championships

European University Sports Association (EUSA) organises university sport events all over Europe. And on 27 June, the time had come for the 2017 European University Badminton Championships (EUBC17), which took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The university badminton championships is divided in two; a team competition and an individual tournament. The players can compete in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles in the individual competition, but fights for their university in the team competition. 

First, the team competition was conducted from June 28-29, where 16 teams from 11 countries competed for the trophy. The teams were divided into four groups (A-D) and the best in each group qualified for the semi-final stage. The winner was to be found between Uludag University from Turkey and University of Oslo from Norway, and the result ended with a 3-0 victory to Uludag. Without losing a single set, the Turkish university defended their previous titles from European University Championships in 2015, and the European Universities Games last year. 

The rest of the teams proceeded to new groups to play for the ranking of the tournament. Four teams in each group; four no. 2’s from each group, four no. 3’s from each group, and, four no. 4’s from each group. The final standings in the team competition is as follows:

Individual competition
110 participants competed in the individual competition from 30 June to 3 July. They represented 16 universities from 11 European countries. 

The hosts from Ljubljana won two medals in the individual competition, bronze for Kaja Stankovič in women’s singles and bronze for Matevž Bajuk/Andraž Krapez in men’s doubles.

Uludag’s dominance continued in the individual competition represented by Neslihan Yigits gold in women’s singles, SInan Zorlu’s bronze in men’s singles, Özge Bayrak/Cemre Fere’s gold in women’s doubles, and, Yusuf Bay/Özge Bayrak’s bronze in mixed doubles.

University of Lisbon, Erzincan University, University of Nottingham and Opole University all won two individual medals, while University of Strasbourg with three medals was close to be tangent to Uludag Univeristy. All thanks to Matéo Martinez who won two; men’s doubles’ silver with Thomas Baures and mixed doubles silver with Alix Saumier.

The badminton event concluded with the individual finals which was followed by the prize ceremonies and the closing ceremony for all the participants.

The first competition of the 11th European University Championships was table tennis which began on 20 June, and the last competition is going to be bridge and chess, which will conclude on 24 September. All the sports included in the European University Championships 2017 are: Table tennis, volleyball, badminton, handball, futsal, rowing, basketball, rugby 7s, tennis, football, judo, karate, taekwondo, 3*3 basketball, sport climbing, beach volleyball, golf, bridge, and, chess.

The different competitions are hosted in different European cities in Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Serbia, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Croatia. 

The event is organised by the Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA) and the Sports Association of the University of Ljubljana, supported by the City of Ljubljana, Badminton Association of Slovenia, Students Organisation of the University of Ljubljana, the University of Ljubljana and other local partners.
