Badminton Europe’s (BEC) Board of Directors concluded a productive Board meeting last weekend, in Milan. The meeting was centered around selecting members for the new term of the BEC Commissions.

In conjunction with the 2017 European Club Championships, Badminton Europe’s Board of Directors were gathered in Milan on 24-25 June to conduct one of their quarterly Board meetings.

Leading up to the meeting Member Associations had the opportunity to nominate candidates for the new Commission term. And after the deadline on 1 June 2017, BEC had received 38 nominations from 21 Member Associations.

Given the amount of applications, the Board had some fundamental discussions on the value of the involvement of the external commission members for Badminton Europe as well as for the Members. In summary, the Board sees lots of value in adding specific experience to the board discussions, broadening the "inspiration" pool and getting immediate input from people active in our Members Associations on activities of BEC as well as an opportunity to increase diversity and rejuvenation of our leadership team.

Three other important benefits BEC sees as well are the opportunity for Member Associations to have a Commission Member to bring back inspiration from the BEC meetings to their organization, the opportunity to network and the identification of new talent for our leadership pool.

Considering the above-mentioned drivers and given the amount of applications and number of different Member Associations applying, a decision was taken to only accept one external Commission Member per Member Association. Furthermore, to better leverage the above described value proposition for having external commission members from our Member Associations involved in our decision-making processes, we decided to increase the number of external Commission Members to 15 instead of 10.

“I can speak for everyone on the Board when I say, that we were delighted to experience such a large amount of interest from many qualified candidates. I want to extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who showed interest in supporting the work of the Confederation and applied to serve on the Commissions.”, said BEC President Gregory Verpoorten after the meeting.

In recent years Badminton Europe has focused on gender equality through the Women in Badminton Commission. It is worth to mention that nominations were received from many very qualified female candidates. The Board ended up selecting 10 women out of the 15 available Commission places which will be a significant boost of female representation in the political bodies of the Confederation.

Finally, the group of Commission Members also represents a good geographical spread and a good balance between new and experienced badminton administrators which hopefully will ensure the right dynamic in the work of the Commissions.
