Corvee inspires Issy to glory

Just as he did in 2016 Lucas Corvee once again led by example and inspired his club Issy Les Moulineaux to Euro glory as the defending champions beat French champions BC Chambly Oise to win back to back European club titles this afternoon in Milan.

Corvee epitomises everything that is great about club badminton as the Parisian club overturned their French final defeat to Chambly to win 4-1. Some say that if you cut his wrist he would bleed Issy and he duly led from the front and won an expected opening point for Issy taking the men’s singles in two games against Eetu Heino.

The Finn was in touch for most of the game but when it mattered Corvee was able to pull away to give his club an expected 1-0 lead with a two set win. In the women’s singles Stefani Stoeva deputised for the injured Sabrina Jaquet and the Bulgarian came very close to winning against favourite Beatriz Corrales.

Stoeva took the opening set 21-11 as Corrales looked a million miles from her best. The conditions and the singles experience of the Spaniard started to tell mid way during the second set and Corrales after a bad start levelled up and one set each with a 21-17 win.

In the deciding set Stoeva raced into a 3-0 lead and at 7-4 Issy were beginning to feel they would steal a 2-0 tie lead. However, Corrales knew her teamed needed the women’s singles point to have any chance in the tie and the Spaniard pushed home to win 21-14 and to level the tie and one match each.

Men’s doubles turns the tide

Chambly sent out Robert Mateusiak and Bastian Kersaudy in the men’s doubles and with such a strong pair you would have been forgiven for thinking it was a guaranteed point for the French champions. However, step into the fore Mr Issy and proceedings were about to take the unlikeliest of twists.

Corvee was dispatched in men’s doubles alongside Vanmael Heriau and the Issy fire was ignited once again. Kersaudy and Matuesiak scraped over the line in the opening game 22-20 but the Issy pair came back from a 16-12 deficit in the second game to tie the match and one game all.

The third set was close and tense throughout and it was not until 18-18 that the game and match as a tie turned on its head with the Issy boys taking three consecutive points to deliver a very much unexpected men’s doubles point.

With a 2-1 overall lead the defending champions had the ultimate luxury of sending European silver medallists and world top 10 pair Stefani and Gabriela Stoeva into battle with the task of delivering the third and vital point for the team.

The sisters duly delivered with little or no opposition from Baumann and Corrales to deliver the title to Issy Les Moulineaux with a 21-10 21-9 win and the by now famous Issy Haka followed (pictured above)

“This has been a big win for our club as to win two titles back to back is a big achievement. We knew that it would be difficult as we were without some key players this week but as a team we stuck together and everyone played a big part in this success” said Corvee after the win.

Commiserations to BC Chambly Oise who have come so close over the past number of years with two silver and bronze medals. Once again France have proven they are the country to beat with their best clubs winning and finishing runners up the biggest European competition for the second consecutive year.
