The 2017 European Championships concluded this afternoon in Kolding Denmark with England emerging as the big winners bagging themselves a brace of gold medals thanks to Rajiv Ouseph in men’s singles and the Adcock’s in mixed doubles.

Ouseph set the ball rolling for England as he overcame the new kid on the block, Anders Antonsen, to win England’s first European men’s singles title since 1990. In a fiercely tight competition it was Ouseph’s experience that got him over the line in two close sets 21-19 21-19.

“I am over the moon to win this title. I had started to feel the opportunity to win had slipped by me but with the draw and the way it panned out for me I felt there was a chance and I didn’t really want to let go of the opportunity.”

Ouseph’s win and that momentum carried into the final match of the day the mixed doubles final. What a world class exhibition it proved to be as Danish defending champions Fischer Nielsen and Pedersen went to battle against Chris and Gabby Adcock.

The English took the opener 21-17 before the Danes bounced back to take the match into a deciding set with a 21-18 win. A run of six points either side of the interval proved the turning point in the deciding set with the English taking the title, their first European medal of any description, in a match that was out of the top drawer of world badminton for the entire 1 hour 20 minutes.

“It means so much to us to be able to beat Fischer and Pedersen in Denmark. The feeling of winning a European gold medal together is like no other feeling. There was a lot of emotion when we won that final point. I hope this can give everyone back in England a big lift after some tough months and inspire more great things from our young players”

Olympic champion storms to hat trick of European titles

Carolina Marin arrived in Denmark this week the hottest of all favourites and the Olympic champion delivered in emphatic style beating all before her and taking the women’s singles title with a two set win over Kirsty Gilmour.

The Spaniard rattled off the opening four points in the opening game and never let Gilmour find a foothold in the match thereafter. The Scot only managed to draw level once the entire match and that was very early on in the second set.

It was the classic Marin steam roller than turned up on court today and Gilmour was always feeding of scraps. A 21-14 21-12 win for Marin was a fair reflecting of her dominance in the final and her dominance all week in Kolding.

“I wanted to win this one badly and it feels really great now to be the triple European champion. I look forward now to defending my title in my home town next year in front of my family and friends.”

While two gold medals may seem a little anti climatic from a Danish perspective the hosts and European powerhouse came away from Kolding with a total of 10 medals to set them apart as the most successful nation.

Boe & Mogensen confirmed the number 1 Danish status as they beat defending champions Conrad & Kolding to win their first European title since 2012. There was some joy for Christinna Pedersen as she collected her fourth consecutive women’s doubles title alongside Kamilla Rytter Juhl confirming the Danish duo as one of the greatest European women’s doubles pairings of all time.

Pedersen & Juhl (pictured above on podium) did not have it all their own way in the final and were taken to three games by the second seeded Stoeva sisters. In the end however the Bulgarians just could not match the Danes and had to settle for silver as the Danes came home in another 1 hour 20 minute match with a 21-11 deciding set win.
