As the tournament entered the quarter final stages, it was time for Europe’s best to battle it out for European medals. With a broad range of countries still in the hunt the Scottish duo of Alexander Dunn & Eleanor O’Donnell (pictured above) were victorious in the Battle of Britain after they beat Hemming & Liew in straight sets 21-16 22-20. Although many would have fancied the English pair to secure a medal, the Scots have beaten Hemming/Liew before and drew on that previous experience to come from 17-15 behind in the second to win 22-20.

Miha Ivanic & Nika Arih (SLO) saw off the strong Swedish pair of Harrbacka & Sjoo to set up a semi-final encounter with second seeds Rodion Alimov & Alina Davletova (RUS) in the bottom half of the mixed doubles draw. Emma Karlsson & Johanna Magnussen (pictured below) gave the Swedes some delight as they beat Li & Petrickowski (GER) to grant them at least a bronze medal.

It wasn’t meant to be today for the three singles representatives from the Czech Republic as Louda, Svabikova and Ondrej Kral all bowed out at the quarter final stages. After disappointment in not picking up a team medal last week, Poland see themselves with 3 doubles pairs (one in each discipline) through to the semi-finals. England are also guaranteed at least two bronze medals thanks to the efforts of David Jones and Hemming/Flynn in the men’s disciplines.

France struggle as Denmark come strong

With the French featuring in ten quarter final matches today, only three have progressed to the medals stages here in Mulhouse. Two of these feature Toma Junior Popov as he saw off U17 European Champion Nhat Nguyen 21-15 21-15 before easing to victory alongside Thom Gicquel over Czech pair Beran & Kral in the men’s doubles. Arnaud Merkle is the other French player left standing as he overcame compatriot Leo Rossi in a challenging 22-20 25-23 victory in front of a home crowd.

The French team will be disappointed to have no female participants receiving medals as Delrue, Hoyaux, Heriau and Lambert all miss out in the closing stages. After a disappointing team event, Denmark see themselves with five entries in the semi-finals and will hoping for gold with Boje & Jakobsen and Magelund & Ravn in both women’s doubles matches. Julie Dawall Jakobsen and Irina Amalie Andersen head the field in singles as they both booked their places in the semi-finals over Sandorhazi and Azurmendi respectively. Daniel Lundgaard & Jesper Toft (pictured above) have also progressed after they beat the Grimley Brothers of Scotland in a thrilling 19-21 21-19 21-19 encounter.
