The current European Champions Carolina Marin and Viktor Axelsen reached the quarter-finals of the 325.000 Dollars Superseries tournament Yonex Sunrise India Open in New Delhi.
Olympic bronze medallist Axelsen of Denmark eased past India's Srikanth Kidambi 21-7, 21-12 in today’s second round and set up a clash against Tzu Wei Wang of Taiwan in Friday’s quarter-finals. His compatriot Hans-Kristian Vittinghus advanced to the las 8 stage as he beat Lee Dong Keun of Korea in straight games 21-19, 21-16.
„I started out poorly going down 15-7 in the first game. As my coach told me after the match, 11 of his 15 points at that time were unforced errors by me, which obviously isn't acceptable at this level.
What is acceptable though is the way I managed to turn things around for myself. Managed to win 30 of the next 38 points - not bad! I lost a bit of focus at 14-4 up in the second game, but not enough to really put the win in danger. So all in all I'm happy with my performance, but also aware I need to be more consistent tomorrow to have a chance of making it to the semis“, Vittinghus wrote on his official Facebook page.
Vittinghus will take on Chou Tien Chen, the number 7 seed, of Taiwan in the quarter-finals.
England's Chris and Gabby Adcock reached the quarter-finals of the India Open with victory over Taiwan's Yang Lee and Hsu Ya Ching. They triumphed 23-21 22-20, winning the final three points to take game one from 21-20 down and then winning the second from 20-20. They will face Thailand's Bodin Isara and Savitree Amitrapai next.
Olympic champion Carolina Marin comfortably secured her place in the quarter-finals with a straight-games victory over the host nation's Ritupama Das in New Delhi. The Spanish top seed made light work of her Indian opponent at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium as she progressed by virtue of a 21-13, 21-11 win. Marin will go up against unseeded Japanese player Minatsu Mitani in the next round tomorrow (Friday).
Former European Champion Marc Zwiebler has withdrawn from his India Open last 16 showdown with Danish youngster Anders Antonsen, due to an foot injury that left him unable to play.
„I have no good news from Delhi as I got an inflammation in my heel again - so could barely walk today. I tried everything to go on court but in the end there was too much pain . I am really gutted, let's hope I can make it until Malaysia Open next week“, the German wrote via Facebook.
